While Hewlett-Packard’s (HPQ) latest entry in this fast-growing sector solves some of the problems, there is more to be done.
Most of the issues I’ve had with existing products involve software. Netbooks generally lack the oomph to run Windows Vista, so most manufacturers have opted for Windows XP. That program feels hopelessly scrunched on netbook screens. Some netbook makers have experimented with Linux, which is better. But that leaves non-techies struggling with an unfamiliar and sometimes ornery environment.
The HP Mini 1000 Mi (from $435 with 10.1-inch display and 60-gigabyte hard drive) takes a new approach. Its software is a version of Linux called Ubuntu that remains hidden from the user—much as the Linux software in TiVos (TIVO) HP Probook 4520S battery and other digital videorecorders does its job and stays out of the way. Running on top of that, there’s a user interface designed by HP that addresses the problem of the small screen and won’t be intimidating to new users.
The Mi doesn’t try to replace a standard PC. It is not aimed at people who use Microsoft (MSFT) Outlook for corporate e-mail, create documents in Word, run spreadsheets, edit photos or video, or prepare presentations on their computers. Like all netbooks, it is designed for Web browsing and consuming information, not creating it. When you fire it up, the initial screen gives you a summary of your e-mail in-box,Dell U661H battery favorite Web links, and access to photos and music stored on the computer. A button at the bottom of the screen lets you use other installed programs, which are displayed as big icons sorted into tabs such as “Internet” and “media.” The designers were careful not to cram lots of unnecessary information onto the home screen. They also kept navigation simple and made sure the choices are presented clearly.
Programs customized for the small screen, such as the preloaded music and video players, also work fine. And the Firefox browser, though designed for a much bigger display, is made far more usable by a button that causes menus and HP 620 battery tool bars to vanish, clearing the screen for Web contents.
The Mozilla Thunderbird mail program that also comes installed is more of a problem. It’s a fine mail application, but menus, icons, and tool bars take up about a quarter of the screen’s 5¼-in. height—space that could have been used for actual messages. The word processor, OpenOffice Writer from Sun Microsystems (JAVA), seems designed to emphasize HP’s contention that the Mi isn’t for creating content. The trimmings take up so much space that there is room for only 19 lines of 12-point type on the screen.
As for the HP hardware, I have no complaints. The laptop itself, which is also available running Windows XP and in a high-fashion Vivienne Tam edition, is a solid design. Where other netbooks suffer from small, sometimes awkward keyboards, the Mi somehow makes room for a full-size unit.
I wish HP had worked a bit harder on the software applications—above all, mail and word processing. But I expect future iterations will be better. Intel (INTC) is working on its own version of Linux for netbooks called Moblin, which is likely to be seen later this year and should help. Microsoft is trying to make sure Windows 7 runs well on these mini-laptops, though what we really need is a small-screen Outlook Lite for corporate mail systems.
The netbook will never replace the full-featured laptop for everyone. For the road warrior who can trade advanced features for mobility, however, it is welcome progress.
HP Gets Its Hands on Palm
On Apr. 28, Hewlett-Packard bought smartphone maker Palm for $1.2 billion in cash. Todd Bradley heads up HP’s Personal Systems Group
You used to run Palm (PALM), and walked away in 2005. What has changed? What is it about the company that attracts HP now?
Our focus as we looked at Palm was to further enhance Canon BP-827 battery our smartphone position. We looked to acquire them for the webOS, their broad patent portfolio, and broadly deploy devices around the webOS. As our customers are moving more and more into this connected world that  they’re all creating, they will be looking to HP to deliver products and services that meet that need.
Which was more important, Palm’s webOS software or its patents?
Clearly, webOS and its ability to offer great multitasking.
Some analysts were saying Palm was worth nothing.
And some people said it was worth $14 a share. We paid $5.70 a share.HP Probook 4520S battery We judged our willingness to pay based on the opportunity.
When did you start looking?
They’re one of many [companies] we look at over time. We always track competitors and our opportunities.
Will webOS replace Windows on all of your smartphones?
Microsoft (MSFT) will continue and will always be a huge strategic partner for Hewlett-Packard (HPQ). Our focus is to create choice for customers around those products and services that will allow them to connect to the information they need as quickly and as safely as they can.
Palm is a consumer play. How much room is there to expand there?
I’ve always thought Palm has always been a “prosumer” play.Lenovo Thinkpad t410 battery We see opportunity in our channel and in enterprise sales. It will be our job to connect to that information that’s critical, in any segment.
Analysts are saying this acquisition was in response to Apple’s growing influence. Was Apple a factor?
We do acquisitions that are based on our own strategic growth plans. Clearly the segments that Apple’s (AAPL) moved into are fast-growing, but so are ours. We’ve done this acquisition because of the capabilities that the webOS brings.
How hard do you think it will be to integrate Palm’s culture with HP’s?
It’s been many years since I was involved in Palm. My focus is on creating awesome connected products. The software development team is very important for us. We incented them. [CEO] Jon Rubinstein has agreed to stay on at HP. That will be a big help.
Do you consider this a coup for HP?
This is going to make HP even bigger than it is today. I think of it as a very strategic acquisition with lots of upside for Hewlett-Packard and our customers.
Dell: Scant Signs of Recovery
Even as chipmaker Intel points to a second-half rebound, No. 2 computer manufacturer Dell says big customers are postponing PC purchases
The signs of recovery that are showing up in parts of the computer industry are hard to find at Dell.
Dell (DELL) is embattled by cutthroat pricing, costly components, and lackluster corporate demand, company executives told Wall Street analysts at a meeting in Austin, Tex., on July 14. The day before, Dell announced Dell Inspiron N5010 battery that it expects a “slight sequential revenue increase” for its second quarter, which ends July 31, but said weak corporate demand for computers will sap its profit margins.
Dell’s performance contrasts with results released on July 14 by computer chip maker Intel (INTC), which reported better-than-expected sales and issued an upbeat forecast for the second half. Intel has called a bottom to the recessionary falloff in tech demand. The company’s second-quarter earnings exceeded Wall Street’s estimates. Chief Executive Paul Otellini in April said PC sales had bottomed and in May said second-quarter chip sales were returning to normal seasonal patterns.
If the outlook is brightening for Intel, the world’s largest maker of chips for PCs, why isn’t it improving as quickly for Dell, one of the ZE2000 AC Adapter biggest makers of computers? Dell gets most of its revenue—77%—from businesses and government agencies. And companies beset by recession are holding off on PC purchases, analysts say. In a July 14 research note, Robert W. Baird senior analyst Jayson Noland, who has a “neutral” rating on Dell’s stock, said: “A meaningful PC refresh may be delayed” as companies prioritize new servers over PCs and look at virtualization technology as a way to extend the life of older desktops and notebooks.
Windows 7 Upgrades Will Take Time
Concern that Dell won’t quickly benefit HP G71 battery from a PC industry rebound is likely to slacken a rally in the company’s shares. The stock has risen more than 18% since May 28, when Dell reported dismal first-quarter earnings. Investors were hoping that corporations might be on the cusp of replacing aging fleets of PCs when Microsoft releases Windows 7. Shares of Dell closed July 14 at 11.97, down 1.05, or 8%.
Microsoft (MSFT) is releasing the long-awaited new version of its Windows operating system in October, but says most corporate upgrades to the new system won’t happen right away.
Shaw Wu, senior analyst at Kaufman Brothers, rates Dell shares a “hold.” On July 14 Wu cut his fiscal 2010 revenue estimate for Dell to $51.4 billion, from $51.6 billion, and reduced his earnings estimate by a penny, to $1.04 per share. Dell’s cost-cutting—the company is in the process of slicing more than $4 billion in expenses by the end of its fiscal 2011—may be masking performance, he said in a research note. “We continue to be concerned with constant restructuring making the quality of [Dell's] earnings suspect,” he said.

Dell: A Longer-Term Rebound
Market researcher Gartner (IT) is getting more bullish on PC sales for the year and even expects the market to grow in the fourth quarter. But shipments will decline for the full year before posting a 10.3% unit increase in 2010.
So a near-term recovery remains elusive for Dell. On July 13, the company said sales in its fiscal second quarter will slightly exceed the $12.34 billion recorded in first-quarter revenue. In the second quarter of last year, sales were $16.43 billion. Dell also said it expects second-quarter profit margins to decline before rebounding in the longer term. Dell’s operating income in the first quarter ended May 1 was 3% of sales. Assuming higher IT spending by companies in the future, Dell said it expects sales to grow 5% to 7% in coming quarters, with operating income of at least 7% of sales.
Speaking at the analyst meeting on July 14, Dell Chief Financial Officer Brian Gladden said that while orders are stabilizing, they remain significantly below year-ago levels. Large corporations and small and midsize businesses continue to sit on the sidelines, he said. Consumer spending remains a bright spot, but cutthroat pricing is pressuring PC margins, even as the cost of components such as memory and LCD screens are rising.
Gladden said in a statement that demand for Dell’s products “seems to have stabilized.” That’s a more bullish reading of the computer market than he made during Dell’s first-quarter earnings call in May, when he said it was too soon to “call a bottom” to falling demand. Nevertheless, Dell looks destined for a long, slow grind before it returns to anything resembling its former strength.
